Why the heck do I need a Wedding Video? | New Jersey Cinematography

So everyone keeps asking, “Are you getting video for your wedding?” and you are looking around and thinking, why? You’ve already got a photographer to capture the moments. What more can video do that photography can’t? Are you ever going to watch that long wedding video in the background while cleaning the house like you see in the movies? What’s the point? Do you really need it? You have to decide for yourself, but in case you are on the fence, here are a few reasons why I believe video to be one of the best investments you can make on your wedding day!

  • Listen back to the letter reading. Better yet, hide a surprise message in the video for the other to see for the first time when they are watching it.
  • You can listen to the voices as you and your loved ones say vows, toasts, etc again and again, forever.
  • Your wedding film is finished with amazing music and clever arrangement for a cinematic, easy to watch movie feel. (IE, it’s not boring any more!)
  • Photos are beautiful and capture the beauty of the moment so you can have physical art for your home that you can look at any moment. Adding video adds movement and words to further tell your story and tie it all together.
  • You can capture the beautiful artistic details in a different way, using panning, tilt and slide movements. For example, if you have candles at your reception, you can watch and experience the beauty of your night as they flicker.
  • You can see all the expressions you missed. Gut wrenching emotion flutters your stomach as you watch your loved ones fight to hold back their tears.
  • Watch the little quirky things your significant other does that make you smile.
  • You and your loved ones ARE your legacy. Your wedding film is the perfect time to capture that legacy forever and share it in it’s most beautiful form.
  • Re-live your vows over and over again.
  • Watch all the moments you don’t get to see. Your wedding goes by so quickly. You can enjoy your wedding day over with video.
  • You have a gorgeous video you can pass down so your children can watch their parents get married with their own eyes.
  • You have a moving documentation of your loved ones after they are gone.

The difference between cinematography “now” and “then” is that wedding films used to be long, boring straight cuts of ceremony, entrances, toasts, so on and so forth. There were no beautiful detail shots or fun couple’s shots. It was just “document the wedding.”

Today, a wedding film should take you on an emotional roller coaster, similar to a big budget film trailer, and is arranged creatively to music and words. This ‘Feature film’ showcases beautifully lit and composed shots that highlight and document each part of the day from getting ready details until you dance the night away.

To find your cinematographer, first look for films that give you that butterfly feeling and make you want to cry, even though it’s not your own wedding. Then, see if they can offer a service that fits your needs and style.

So we offer cinematic wedding films. Of course I’m going to tell you to get it, right? Maybe I am a little biased, but the one thing I know is that I couldn’t imagine not having our wedding film. Dave and I invested a big part of our budget into photography and cinematography for our wedding and a year and a half later, our wedding photos are still our favorite desktop photos, social media photos and we still watch our 10 minute wedding feature all the time. (I’m pretty sure I watched it on repeat a hundred times when I first got our video.) Our friends and family still share the video and people we’ve never met before recognize us and say how much they enjoyed it because it popped up on social media and they loved how well it captured the emotion of our day.

Watching it reminds me every day of how important the loved ones in my life are. It reminds me to smile and focus on the things that make me happy, like my family, friends, and my incredible husband.

So, should you have video? That’s up to you, but  I know I will never regret having it.
